Sam Penrod ReportingJust more than an hour ago a jury reached a verdict in the case of a man accused of kidnapping a Provo girl. The verdict came in after eight hours of deliberations, and the verdict is guilty.

Jimmy Guard was on trial for trying to abduct a nine-year old girl a year and a half ago.

Candy McBride, November 2004: "He had my hands over my head like that and had his hand over my mouth."

Verdict Reached in Kidnapping Case

That was Candy McBride, a few days after the abduction attempt. Her efforts to fight her attacker, using what she learned in the RADKIDS self defense program, was credited with helping her escape.

This week, she took the witness stand and testified against Jimmy Guard, whose photo she picked out of a lineup as her attacker. Tonight the jury found Guard guilty.

Alyson Larsen, RADKIDS Instructor: "We've got to teach our kids to be honest, strong; and we're glad the system came through and they were able to work in the favor of the children."

Dana Facemeyer, Defense Attorney: "It's sad because I think Jimmy is not guilty."

While the jury did not hear about Guard passing a lie detector test in this case, they also did not hear he is accused in a separate case a few months before in Springville, of trying to lure two young girls into his car.

Authorities found a video camera, duct tape, a hatchet and condoms in his car. That case has still not gone to trial.

Jimmy Guard will be sentenced at the end of June and faces five years to life in prison.
