(KSL News) -- A rare announcement today on a political issue from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The governing First Presidency of the Utah-based church asked the federal government to look for alternative options for disposing nuclear waste.

The official statement reads in part, "It is not reasonable to suggest that any one area bear a disproportionate burden of the transporation and concentration of nuclear waste.

"We ask the federal government to harness the technological and creative power of the country to develop options for the disposal of nuclear waste."

This comes amid the controversy of a proposed nuclear waste storage facility in Utah's Tooele County.

Today a spokeswoman for the company trying to bring the waste to Utah, offered little reaction.

Sue Martin, Private Fuel Storage: "Certainly they have a right to make any kind of statement they wish to comment on issues that are going on in the state."

State leaders hope the public will write and email the Bureau of Land Management to convince them to reject the deal.
