(KSL News) -- Rallies were held in several cities today to bring attention to the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan.
A crowd gathered in downtown Salt Lake City this afternoon to listen to speakers. There is also a campaign to generate a million postcards for delivery to President Bush... asking him to do more to end the violence.
Actors, athletes, politicians and religious leaders joined thousands in Washington D-C... even the man who was the subject of the movie "Hotel Rwanda" was there.
Paul Rusesabagina, Former Hotel Manager: "What I saw in Darfur was a disaster. A shame to mankind."
Mohammed Abdelrhman, Darfur Refugee: "Women being raped, the elderly taken and tortured. Whatever you can imagine has been committed against them...it's very terrible."
George Clooney, Actor: "If we turn our heads and look away and hope that it'll all disappear then they will all of them--an entire generation of people."
The violence began three years ago when rebels started to battle the Arab government. The government then encouraged militiamen to wage a campaign of terror.
The Sudanese government today accepted a peace proposal from the African Union, but rebels say they will not sign the plan until changes are made.
