COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS -- Police are searching for a gunman who tied up one person while robbing a credit union.

The robbery happened at the American United Credit Union in Cottonwood Heights around 7:30 this morning at 2277 E. Fort Union Blvd.

The Cottonwood Heights Police Department says a credit union employee who was the first to arrive was opening the building when a man with a gun jumped out of the bushes and grabbed her. The woman says the gunman tied her up and demanded money.

"He demands money, he demands access to the vault, he has a small caliber handgun possibly a 380 or equivalent size, and then he ties her up," said Sgt. Gary Young with the Cottonwood Heights Police Department.

After a few minutes of trying unsuccessfully to get money from the vault the gunman ran from the credit union, leaving a trail of footprints in the snow. The employee in the credit union then managed to untie herself and call police, who searched the area with a police dog but lost the man's trail.

Police are looking at surveillance video from a nearby business and are working with the employee, who they say despite the traumatic events has been a great witness.

"She looked pretty well composed, she was articulate, not real frazzled, she was able to give us good descriptors for our investigation," Young said. "We're getting the bank surveillance and hopefully get some more information from that."

The gunman is described as a Hispanic or Philippino man in his late 20s or early 30s, about 5'6". Police say he has deep acne scars in his cheeks. ----
