SALT LAKE CITY — A high-speed chase starting in Salt Lake City ended in a shootout between police and another man in Tooele County early Tuesday.

No officers were injured. One man, who has not been identified, was taken to a local hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds.

The incident began just before 5 a.m. when a shooting was reported near 235 S. 500 West in Salt Lake City. One man was shot in the leg, said Salt Lake police detective Greg Wilking. That man was taken to a local hospital in good condition. Information on the circumstances that led up to that shooting was not immediately available.

Officers investigating that incident spotted a vehicle matching the description of the shooter's vehicle and attempted to pull it over, Wilking said. Two people were inside the car.

The driver did not pull over and a chase ensued in Salt Lake City. The driver then drove onto I-80 and headed west toward Tooele. The chase at times reached speeds over 100 miles per hour. Police deployed spike strips in efforts to stop the car. The car exited at Lake Point in Tooele County and the chase ended when the men crashed into a yard on Canyon Road.

At the end of the chase, there was an exchange of gunfire between one man and at least two Salt Lake police officers, Wilking said. He said he did not know if both officers struck the gunman.

The other man in the car surrendered without incident.

Tooele and West Valley police are investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Salt Lake Police Chief Mike Brown said the two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine paid administrative leave.

Brown said the department stands behind the officers and believes they made every effort to diminish the risk of injuries to those involved in the chase and shooting as well as the neighborhood where the pursuit ended.
