OREM — Freshman Cooper Vest belted a first-pitch, three-run home run over the right-field wall at Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem to give Dixie a 6-4 win over Snow Canyon in Saturday’s Class 3A state championship game.
“I thought I hit it off the wall until I touched home,” Vest said after the game, still in shock. “Everyone told me it went out.
“I was like, ‘what the heck?’”
Cannon Seacrest blasted an RBI double to give Snow Canyon a lead in the top of the fifth, but Vest's bomb completed the rally to give the Flyers a title over their region rival.
“The last thing I said before he stepped into the box was ‘I put you on the lineup card in this spot for a reason.’ First pitch, he made it happen,” Dixie coach Danny Ipson said.

3A Softball
Grantsville 7, Bear River 4 — At Spanish Fork, Braille Crossman smacked a two-run homer in the seventh inning to help Grantsville pull away from Bear River in the Class 3A state softball championship Saturday in Spanish Fork for the Cowboys’ first softball title since 1998.
“When you’re younger you win tournaments, and it’s cool; we get to ride around on the fire truck,” Crossman said. “Now, to come back and say ‘we’re the best (dang) team in the state’?
“That’s pretty freaking cool.”
Bear River was down two in the bottom of the sixth until Dacia Hobb smashed a solo shot to bring the Bears within one.
It was as close as the Bears would get.
“It’s beyond explainable. We haven’t taken state in so long,” winning pitcher Alesa Casper said. “All I could do is cry. Too much excitement.”
