SALT LAKE CITY — A brush fire prompted the evacuation of more than 20 homes near the Utah-Idaho border Tuesday, authorities said.
The fire was reported around 12:30 p.m. just west of Clifton, Idaho, a small town about 15 miles north of the Utah-Idaho border. The fire moved eastward into the town, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, and threatened about two dozen homes, which were evacuated.
Evacuations were lifted early Tuesday evening. No homes or other structures were burned, according to Franklin County Fire District Capt. Randon Naegle. County firefighters were assisted by the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service and crews from Cache County.
The fire grew to between 1,500 and 2,000 acres Tuesday, Naegle said. Its cause was not immediately known.
Erratic winds made the fire difficult to fight, Naegle said, but he was confident it would be at least somewhat contained Tuesday night.
At one point Tuesday, motorists were also evacuated from the Westside Highway between Clifton and the nearby town of Dayton, Naegle said.
