SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle police say a scammer may be targeting nonprofits after the suspect was able to con almost $10,000 from an organization that helps hearing-impaired children.
KING-TV reports that the scammer contacted the Seattle Hearing, Speech, and Deafness Center offering a $30,000 donation, but when the organization received a check it was for $39,850.
Over email, the thief said the additional money had been earmarked for a different charity and asked that HSDC wire the difference back to him. Officials obliged only to find the original check was a fake, leaving the organization out more than $9,000.
Seattle police believe other nonprofit groups have been targeted in similar scams in Washington and Oregon.
