WEST VALLEY CITY — A West Valley mother accused of stabbing her two children was charged Tuesday with attempted murder.

Mary Galvis, 47, who was arrested over the weekend, was charged in 3rd District Court with two counts of attempted murder, a first-degree felony.

Police responding to the West Valley home, 3427 S. 2660 West, early Saturday found the two children — a 12-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy — covered in blood as Galvis' husband restrained her on the floor. He told the arriving officer "she stabbed my children" and "she was going to kill them herself," court documents state.

Investigators found a large pool of blood inside the front door and two knives, one with blood on the blade, in a back bedroom.

Both children were treated at Primary Children's Hospital for multiple stab wounds that required stitches, the charges state. The 12-year-old girl had two stab wounds in the upper chest and a pneumothorax while the 8-year-old boy was stabbed in his upper chest, forearm, thigh and knee.

A teenage sister who was also home at the time of the incident received minor injuries "while attempting to take the knife from the mother," according to a police report. She was treated for her injuries at the scene.

A check of Utah state court records indicates that Galvis, a Colombian national, has no prior criminal history other than issues with debt collection. She was evaluated at a an area hospital before being booked into Salt Lake County Jail.
