BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union's agency for judicial cooperation says a Portuguese national and a Russian have been arrested in Rome on suspicion of being involved in espionage for hire.
Eurojust agency officials said Wednesday they couldn't provide the suspects' names, or specify which foreign intelligence service the two are believed to have sold confidential information to.
A Eurojust statement said the suspects were arrested last weekend in the Italian capital, and evidence was seized.
The EU agency said the case was investigated by the Portuguese Central Criminal Investigation and Penal Action Department, and that house searches were also carried out in Portugal.
Eurojust said the suspected spies were taken into custody on European arrest warrants, and have been brought before Italian judicial authorities.
