MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican authorities in a northern border state say a 7-year-old boy was shot in the head when gunmen fired on a military convoy.

A Tamaulipas state government statement says the child was hospitalized in critical condition after Tuesday's shooting in Matamoros, a city across the border from Brownsville, Texas.

The statement says the boy was with his father and sister in a vehicle when gunmen traveling in a van spotted the military convoy and began shooting at the soldiers as well as other cars around them while fleeing. It says the troops did not fire back to avoid hitting innocent civilians.

Officials did not say which criminal gang the gunmen might have belonged to, but the Gulf drug cartel is the dominant group in Matamoros.
