CHISINAU, Moldova (AP) — Moldovan police have found Molotov cocktails, detonators, mobile phones and masks at two locations in the capital Chisinau and suspect they were intended to be used against peaceful protesters.
Interior Minister Oleg Balan said police found one cache in a disused building Wednesday. Later, they found another cache at a second location near the airport. It wasn't clear who had put them there.
Retired colonel Anatol Caraman said the caches could have been intended to disrupt peaceful protests. Thousands of Moldovans have taken to the streets in recent months to protest against corruption and call for the country to reunite with Romania.
Moldova is a former Soviet republic of 4 million, which signed an association agreement with the European Union last year. It has a breakaway pro-Russian region — Trans-Dniester.
