BAGHDAD (AP) — Separate attacks have taken a deadly toll north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, today.
A series of car bombs ripped through a crowded marketplace and a Shiite militia's checkpoint, killing at least 19 people.
Police says the first attack involved a car bomb explosion near a busy market in the town of Balad Ruz, 45 miles northeast of Baghdad. Minutes later, a second car bomb went off, targeting people who gathered to inspect the site of the first blast.
Police and hospital officials say 11 people were killed and 50 wounded.
Later, a suicide bomber drove his explosive-laden car into a checkpoint manned by Shiite militiamen, killing eight Shite fighters and wounding 15 others.
Meanwhile in Baghdad, Iraq's Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi vowed to track down and punish those who smashed rare ancient artifacts in the northern city of Mosul.
