SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah's Pioneer Day parade is underway in Salt Lake City as residents commemorate the date in 1847 when Mormon pioneers ended their treacherous journey from Illinois and discovered the Salt Lake Valley.
The Days of '47 Parade brings thousands of people to downtown Salt Lake City to watch horse-drawn carriages and floats. Many families come the night before to camp out for prime seats.
Many businesses and government offices close for the state holiday, which is so big, locals often refer to it as "the holiday."
This year's parade theme is aimed at inspiring today's generation.
