SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The University of Utah plans to award an honorary degree to a philanthropist who has helped lead groups that some say espouse an anti-gay rhetoric.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1N8kh2l) that Lynette Nielsen Gay has worked for Family Watch International and the World Congress of Families, which some say push to limit the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals.
Gay's experience at these organizations was originally included on her bio when the state's flagship school announced the honorary degree in March. The university has since removed references to the organizations.
The school says it removed them because the organizations' agendas do not reflect the school's values.
Messages attempting to reach Gay for comment Friday through the university and an organization she founded were not returned by the philanthropist.
