SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Federal immigration authorities say agents have arrested 82 people who had criminal convictions on their records and were subject to possible deportation.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a news release Friday that the arrests came after a weeklong public safety operation.
Authorities say the convictions ranged from assault with a weapon to shoplifting.
The arrests came in 22 Utah cities across the state. Salt Lake City had the largest number of arrests with 26.
Those arrested will be deported to six different countries. The majority of are from Mexico.
ICE officials say those who have outstanding removal orders will be deported immediately. Two people will face new charges of illegal re-entry.
The others will be held in ICE custody until travel arrangements are made or they get a hearing before an immigration judge.
