CANONSBURG, Pa. (AP) — Classes have resumed in a western Pennsylvania school district following a 21-day teachers strike, but the educators still don't have a contract.
About 4,300 students went back to school in Peters Township on Friday. State law mandated they return in order to get the required 180 days of instruction by June 15.
Nearly 300 teachers in the suburban Pittsburgh district went on strike Oct. 28. Disputed issues include salaries, class size and the length of work days.
According to the district website, state law calls for nonbinding arbitration after a strike. If an agreement still isn't reached, teachers can strike a second time for a limited duration.
The teachers' previous five-year contract expired Aug. 31.
