MIAMI (AP) — Hurricane Blanca is strengthening quickly in the eastern Pacific and is expected to become a major hurricane.
The storm's maximum sustained winds strengthened Tuesday night to 85 mph (140 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the storm is expected to strengthen further Wednesday, and will produce swells that are likely to generate dangerous surf and rip currents along portions of the coast of southwestern Mexico.
Blanca is centered about 395 miles (640 kilometers) southwest of Zihuatanejo, Mexico. The hurricane is currently stationary, and is expected to move little through Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Andres is weakening further, with maximum sustained winds of near 80 mph (130 kph) Tuesday night. Andres is forecast to weaken to a tropical storm by Wednesday and a tropical depression by Thursday. It is centered about 970 miles (1,560 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. It is moving northwest at 8 mph (13 Kph).
