PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is promoting legislation she says will help colleges strengthen their engineering programs while also helping manufacturers.
The bill promoted by Gillibrand on Friday during a visits to Plattsburgh and Rochester would designate 25 schools as 'Manufacturing Universities' and provide them with incentives to align their curriculum with the needs of modern manufacturers.
Qualified universities would get grants of $5 million a year for four years.
Gillibrand says the legislation will give more students advanced manufacturing skills and ensure that New York's manufacturing sector remains competitive.
Gillibrand introduced the legislation in March along with a bipartisan group of senators.
