LAS VEGAS (AP) — A baby in a stroller survived a hit-and-run crash at a Las Vegas bus stop that killed a 6-year-old girl and her grandmother, authorities said.

Police said the crash occurred when a 2005 Volvo S60 went over a curb near seven pedestrians at a busy intersection.

Maria Garcia, 58, and Alyssa Aisa, 6, were standing next to a bus shelter when they were run down. The coroner's office said they died from their injuries hours after being taken to a hospital.

Police said a witness followed the fleeing car to an apartment complex, where Leonardo Ruesga, 20, of Las Vegas, and a passenger were found hiding by a police K-9 unit.

Neither had been hurt in the crash. The passenger was a 15-year-old girl from Las Vegas.

Ruesga was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence involving death and failure to stop in a fatal crash.

Authorities said the passenger side of the car first hit the 18-month-old girl in the stroller before striking Garcia and Aisa.

The baby was hospitalized with minor injuries to her lower body and later released. She was not related to the two other victims.

Police said Ruesga told investigators that he ingested illegal substances before the crash.

The Associated Press could not determine if Ruesga had a listed telephone number or an attorney who could comment on the case.
