RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Richmond school officials have apologized for a 2013 search of several Hispanic students at a high school.
Media outlets report that Superintendent Dana T. Bedden and Huguenot High Principal Jafar Barakat issued a formal apology for the incident on Monday during an assembly at the school.
Bedden said the students were searched and threatened with deportation in a misguided effort to address tensions between black and Hispanic students.
The incident occurred before Bedden became the district's superintendent. He said the district is taking steps to improve inclusion but it's a work in progress.
Former student Jonathan Villatoro is among those who were searched. He says the apology is a good first step.
