SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Thirty-seven California school districts accused in a 2013 lawsuit of skimping on state rules would have to show proof they are providing physical education during the school day under the terms of a proposed settlement.
The Orange County Register reports (http://bit.ly/1zlMd54 ) attorney Donald Driscoll filed paperwork to settle the lawsuit Tuesday. He filed the suit after noticing his son lacked PE at his Northern California school.
Under state law, elementary school students are required to receive at least 200 minutes of PE for each 10 days of school.
The settlement terms would apply only to the districts named in the suit.
Budget cuts have led some districts to let go of their gym teachers and instead have classroom instructors teach physical education in recent years.
