WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) — Newly elected members of the Navajo Nation Council are meeting in their first regular session this week.
The first order of business is selecting someone to lead the tribe's legislative branch.
The council has been without a permanent speaker since Johnny Naize resigned last April, months after he was charged in a criminal case alleging he misused tribal funds. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery in the case.
Council Delegate LoRenzo Bates had been filling in until earlier this month when lawmakers chose Kee Allen Begay Jr. as the pro tem speaker.
The council's agenda for the weeklong winter session is short.
Lawmakers will hear reports on Monday in Window Rock before acting on any legislation, including a bill to rescind a special Navajo presidential election.
