OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — State Superintendent Janet Barresi is asking the federal government for an immediate reinstatement of a flexibility waiver that the state lost when the Legislature repealed Common Core education standards for schoolchildren.
Barresi announced Tuesday that she and her staff requested the waiver in a conference call late Monday with officials from the U.S. Department of Education.
Barresi says the Oklahoma State Department of Education plans to resubmit its waiver request.
The feds rejected Oklahoma's waiver extension in August, claiming the state couldn't demonstrate its standards adequately prepared students for college or careers.
But last week, the state Regents for Higher Education determined the current state standards in English and mathematics are "college and career ready."
At stake is the state's flexibility over the use of about $30 million.
