PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council says state officials, including the Legislature, must figure out how to pay for insurance for more than 26,000 Rhode Islanders.
The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1Dr14zB ) that RIPEC says in a report to be released Monday that the state will have to identify non-federal dollars to keep the state-run exchange operating or turn it over to the federal Department of Health and Human Services.
The Affordable Care Act requires state-based health benefit exchanges to become financially self-sustained by Jan. 1.
Rhode Island is one of four states with state-based exchanges that want to continue spending federal money into 2015.
RIPEC says no one at the top level of state government in Rhode Island has figured out how to pay for the revamped health insurance program despite several reports and hearings.
