CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Fifteen West Virginia students have been named regional winners of an essay contest that earns them money to invest for college.
The children in kindergarten through fifth grades were recognized at a ceremony Thursday at the state Culture Center in Charleston as part of the seventh annual "When I Grow Up" essay contest.
They were selected from more than 3,000 entries across the state and received $500 toward a SMART529 investment account. Their schools also will receive $500 each to support programs.
In addition, a $4,500 investment grand prize was awarded to Brynne Hartung, a student at Frankfort Intermediate School in Mineral County. Her name was selected during a random drawing.
Shady Spring Elementary School teacher Julia Reynolds was awarded $2,500 cash for her essay about college planning.
