ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Twenty-three community health centers in upstate New York are getting $6.3 million in federal funding to help them meet increasing demand for primary care services.
U.S. senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand made the funding announcement on Monday. The money will support 23 centers throughout northern and western New York.
The two Democrats say the funds will pay for expanded primary care services for local residents and allow the community health centers to hire more providers.
The federal investment is part of a national effort to expand community health programs to reach 1.5 million new patients around the country. Currently, about 21.7 million Americans receive care at one of the nation's 1,300 community health centers.
