IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa City Community School Board is set to discuss where to place a student who is required to register as a sex offender.

Superintendent Stephen Murley told the Iowa City Press-Citizen (http://icp-c.com/1vqloNf ) that Iowa law requires the district to offer education to all school-age children in the district, including sex offenders who must register. The board will discuss the issue in a closed session before Tuesday's regular meeting.

Murley said the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act bars district officials from releasing most information about the situation, including the student's name, offense and which school building the student will be placed.

He said the district will work on the placement process with the student's parents. State law requires school boards to hold hearings to determine where to educate such students.

"This is new territory for us," Murley said. "We have not done this at least since I've been here."

Karin Hamilton, a public service executive at the Iowa Sex Offender Registry, said a sex offender who has committed an offense against a child is not allowed on school grounds unless enrolled in that school.

School Board President Chris Lynch declined to comment on the matter.
