DETROIT (AP) — A foundation focused on health and education is distributing 45,000 new children's workbooks to 45 Detroit-area nonprofits to promote summer literacy.
Long Beach, California-based The Molina Foundation said the distribution is scheduled for Thursday at the Kiwanis Club's Books for Kids warehouse in Detroit. Organizations receiving the donations include Detroit's police and public libraries, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan, Mexican American Council, New Bethel Baptist Church, Urban Neighborhood Initiatives and YMCA of Metro Detroit.
Organizers say the activity and workbooks are in English and Spanish. The campaign aims to curb the "summer slide" during the academic break.
Loading and sorting will be done by local employees of Molina Healthcare, a corporate sponsor of the foundation. The company provides paid time off to employees to work with local charities.
