CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The owners of rental property in Carson City have agreed to pay a $36,000 fine to settle a federal lawsuit accusing them of discriminating against families and children in violation of the Fair Housing Act.
The lawsuit alleged that Betty and Hughston Brinson placed a series of advertisements for a 36-unit apartment complex in Carson City that indicated they preferred to rent to adult tenants.
The Justice Department said Thursday they also were accused of refusing to rent a separate single-family home to a family with three children.
If approved by a federal judge, the department said the Brinsons will pay $14,000 to the family that filed the complaint with the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Equal Opportunity Office.
They also will pay a $12,000 civil penalty and $10,000 to a victims' compensation fund.
