IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — Two eastern Idaho canal companies are moving forward with plans to build powerhouses on adjacent sides of the Snake River.
The Post Register reports (http://bit.ly/1HHIbOT ) that the Idaho and New Sweden irrigation districts are looking to get a license with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for the proposed County Line Road Hydroelectric Project. The project would be constructed about seven miles north of Idaho Falls.
The project includes building two powerhouses along the Idaho Canal and Great Western Canal, with a total capacity of about 2.5 megawatts. They are hoping to provide power for more than 1,500 homes.
But concerns have been brought up regarding the project's impacts on the Snake River and its ecosystem.
The commission is planning to conduct an environmental assessment this week.
