SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake man was charged Wednesday with first-degree felony aggravated arson in connection with a fire earlier this month.

Kyle Rod Stinson, 35, is charged in 3rd District Court with setting fire to an apartment complex on 400 S. Redwood Road where many of the units were occupied at the time of the incident.

In the early hours of March 10, firefighters responded to the complex and saw smoke coming from a second story room. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, and only had to evacuate the units immediately surrounding the unit where the fire was started.

West Valley Police also responded to the structure fire and found Stinson at the scene.

According to charging documents, which cite the testimony of 10 witnesses, Stinson is suspected of setting fire to the 24-unit apartment complex.

Charging documents also claim that Stinson said that he had attempted to first start the fire by touching a lit cigarette to a piece of paper, before turning to three or four lighters to start the fire in his own apartment.

The charging documents also state that Stinson said he was aware that the building was occupied at the time he set fire to the structure. Email: rmorgan@deseretnews.com
