NEWCASTLE, Iron County — Two 3-month-old babies and their mother were injured Wednesday evening after their car slid off state Route 56 and rolled at least twice, officials said.

Around 5 p.m., the family was traveling west in a Chevy Impala on the highway about 7 miles outside Newcastle when their vehicle started to drift off the right side of the road, according to Utah Highway Patrol.

The driver overcorrected to the left, and the car skidded across and off the left side of the highway. The car slid until it hit an embankment and rolled at least twice before landing on its left side, UHP reported.

The babies had been sitting in car seats in the back seat of the car, but the car seats were not fastened correctly, UHP said. One of the babies fell out of their car seat and was discovered lying inside the car. The baby was flown to Primary Children’s Hospital with what seemed to be injuries that were not life threatening, according to UHP.

The mother of the babies, who was a passenger in the vehicle, and her other baby were transported to Cedar City Hospital with minor injuries, UHP said.

Utah Highway Patrol officials said they are investigating speed as a possible factor in the crash. The driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. It is not clear if the driver was a family member.

More information will be posted when it becomes available.
