PROVO — BYU hosted the Utah State Aggies in Provo Saturday to finish off the regular season and beat the Aggies 28-10. BYU was hoping to finish with an 8-4 record heading into their bowl game, and the Aggies were hoping to snap a four-game losing streak and end their 2016 season with a win against the Cougars.
While BYU was the heavy favorite going into the game, most fans knew that nothing is guaranteed anything when it comes to the battle for the Old Wagon Wheel. One thing fans can seem to bet on each time the Aggies and Cougars get together is that BYU quarterback Taysom Hill will get hurt.
The Aggies (3-9) have ended Hill’s season twice with injuries and while we don’t know the extent of Hill latest ailment we do know it came at the hands of Utah State and it could likely ruin his plans for playing in the bowl game.
Hill was having a fairly good night with 101 yards and a TD through the air and another 46 yards on the ground before the injury. During a run in the fourth quarter Hill leaped over an Aggie defender for a few more yards and fell awkwardly onto his left arm. When the replay was shown it needed to be accompanied with the warning, “This is not for the squeamish.” They weren’t kidding. Hill went straight to the locker room and never returned to the game.
Hill has struggled at times this season, but he received an outpouring of love and gratitude on Twitter following the injury:
Late Saturday, there was still no official word as to Hill’s status and the extent of the injury.
It’s hard to get too excited about a win over Utah State or anything else good that came out of the game knowing that Hill suffered yet another injury, but there were some great things that happened Saturday night in Provo.
Mitchell Juergens had a great grab to record his second touchdown of the season:
The BYU defense held USU to just 97 yards on the ground, 200 yards of offense overall and even had a score:
Tanner Mangum came in and threw a TD:
And finally, Jamaal Williams had a great night in his return with 131 yards and one TD:
The Cougars started slow but got their feet under them and took advantage of USU mistakes and won comfortably. A lot of the focus will now shift to the bowl game and whether Mangum or Hill will be the game’s starter.
While that’s being figured out, a lot of focus, energy and love is being focused on BYU’s running back’s coach Reno Mahe and his young daughter who is in the hospital following an in-home accident.
Before, during and after the game fans on both sides of this game offered their support to Mahe and his family.
Next up for the Cougars is the Poinsettia Bowl Dec. 21 in San Diego. The Mountain West foe for that game is still unknown.
