SALT LAKE CITY — Two men have been sentenced to prison for their roles in the aggravated robbery that led to the death of a popular convenience store clerk.
Martin Castillo, 20, pleaded guilty in December to aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, while a murder charge in the slaying of 62-year-old David Marsh was dismissed. Castillo was sentenced Monday to five years to life in prison.
Alexis Alan Garcia, 21, pleaded guilty in March to aggravated robbery, as well as manslaughter, a second-degree felony. He will serve consecutive terms of two to 20 years and six years to life in the Utah State Prison.
The gunman in the heist that left Marsh dead, 24-year-old Juan Andres Zalazar, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies under gang enhancements. Zalazar was sentenced last week to consecutive terms of five years to life in prison for the manslaughter conviction, and 10 years to life for the aggravated robbery.
The trio was originally charged with murder in Marsh's death. The clerk was shot and killed in an armed robbery by two masked men at the Lee Mart convenience store where he worked, 5905 S. 700 West.
Surveillance footage shows two men — wearing bandannas over their faces and dressed in jackets and hats — run into the store after Marsh unlocked the door but before it opened for business. They then rushed behind the counter to where Marsh stood by the cash register and took its contents at gunpoint.
As the men were running out of the store, Marsh is seen on the video throwing the empty cash tray at them. One of the gunmen, who prosecutors later identified as Zalazar, responds by turning and firing multiple rounds, striking and killing Marsh.
Marsh died of his wounds five days later.
