LAS VEGAS — The actions of a local fifth-grade student saved the life of a friend who was choking. On Wednesday, that student was honored during a lunchtime assembly.

Two weeks ago, students Gabriel Wallace and Kyle Sucalidto were eating lunch at Steven G. Schorr Elementary School. When Kyle started to choke on rice, Gabriel sprang into action, performing the Heimlich maneuver. It's believed Gabriel saved Kyle's life.

"I feel like I always really knew it (Heimlich maneuver), or saw it on TV," Gabriel said.

"I realized he saved me. I thanked him a bunch," Kyle said.

Steve Schorr and the Clark County Fire Department honored Gabriel with a hero award. Both students received VIP passes to Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay.
