ST. GEORGE — A driver was killed and his passenger critically injured in a car accident on state Route 7 Saturday afternoon.
The accident happened just after 4 p.m., Utah Highway Patrol officials said, on the highway leading to and from the St. George Municipal Airport.
The driver was driving a white Corvette west “at a high rate of speed” prior to the accident, the UHP said in a written statement.
“The Corvette went airborne as it crossed the threshold of the River Road structure and then collided with the guardrail on the right," the statement said. "The front end of the Corvette became lodged under the guardrail and slid approximately 200 feet.”
The driver died at the scene and his passenger was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center in critical condition, according to the UHP.
Both were wearing seat belts, the UHP statement said.
The highway was closed at River Road as troopers investigated the accident.
