Salem Hills defeated Bonneville twice, by scores of 10-1 and 8-2, to repeat as 4A softball state champions.

The Skyhawks had to win three games in a row Thursday to complete the repeat, but did it with ease thanks to the pitching of Kirtlyn Bohling.

The senior pitched 21 innings in one day to lead her team to another championship.

“We were hungry,” she said about the impressive run to a title. “We wanted it. We talked about it today and It’s the last game for a lot of us. No regrets, I guess, we had to leave it all out there on the field and we did.”

Salem Hills needed to work its way through the loser’s bracket of the double elimination tournament to earn the chance to defend its title.

Its day started with a matchup with rival Spanish Fork. Bohling pitched a complete 8-inning game in a 4-3 win.

She then had to turn around and face Bonneville, a team that beat the Skyhawks earlier in the tournament. She pitched six shutout innings and struck out six batters in a 10-1 win that set up a true championship game.

Bohling was just as good in the second game, scattering six hits over seven innings and gave up just two runs in an 8-2 title clinching victory.

“Last year we took the easy road and won them all,” Bohling remembered. “This year we were, like, hey let’s change it up. We’ll do something new again. We came through and won it big. It made it worth it.”

Bohling also helped her cause at the plate. She belted a two-run home run in the fourth inning of the first game against Bonneville that was part of a five run inning.

She also received plenty of support from her teammates.

In the second game, Amelia Weight hit a solo home run, and a two-run double by Alex Oveson gave Bohling the cushion she needed.
