SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — The University of New Mexico Board of Regents has a new member.

Dr. Tom Clifford was appointed to the board Friday by New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez.

Clifford brings 30 years of finance and tax policy experience to the position.

After a 20-year career in state government, he retired earlier this year as cabinet secretary of the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration.

Prior to that, Clifford was the policy and research director for the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department and chief economist for the state Legislative Finance Committee.

Clifford also spent a decade working for the federal government and has taught budgeting and finance classes for the University of New Mexico.

He holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
