AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A Maine museum employee thwarted a man's attempt to grab a 2-year-old girl and leave the building, resulting in the man's arrest, police said Thursday.
The girl was at the Maine State Museum on Tuesday with her grandmother, who had turned her back to hang up coats. Police said part-time museum receptionist Sharon Wise, a retired teacher, saw the man grab the girl and intervened, causing him to release the child.
"When he grabbed her, she (Wise) went right over and told him to let go and wouldn't take no for an answer," Chief Russell Gauvin of the Bureau of Capitol Police said.
Police arrested James Cavallaro in the Augusta museum's parking lot. They said he didn't resist arrest.
The 58-year-old Bath man was charged with assault and violating his conditions of release on bail on an unrelated charge. He was being held at the Kennebec County Jail on Thursday.
A phone for Cavallaro was disconnected. It was unclear if he had an attorney.
