SALT LAKE CITY — Police say it was a scary situation at Horizonte High School on Tuesday where Tasers were deployed on two people after an officer was punched in the head.

A Salt Lake police officer working at the school, 1234 S. Main, attempted to question a teenager — who is not a student there — when he walked onto the property about 6:30 p.m., said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Cody Lougy.

The officer told the teen he could not be in the building. The teenager left but returned a short time later and again caused problems with the officers at the school, Lougy said.

As police attempted to take the teen into custody, a group of other people nearby started to assemble near the officers and one person punched an officer in the head, Lougy said. The officers called for backup.

"Eight additional police officers showed up on scene. The officers were keying up their mics, and (dispatchers) could hear the fight," he said.

As a crowd gathered, officers attempted to gain control of the situation. Tasers were deployed on a 17-year-old boy and a man who had just turned 18 the day before, Lougy said. They were both arrested in addition to another 17-year-old boy.

Latu Latu, 18, was arrested for investigation of several charges, including riot and resisting arrest. The two 17-year-olds were booked into juvenile detention.

The officer who was punched in the head did not suffer any serious injury. Email: preavy@deseretnews.com Twitter: DNewsCrimeTeam
