SALT LAKE CITY — A woman was stabbed multiple times outside a homeless shelter Monday.
Witnesses observed a man walking on Rio Grande Street (455 West) near 210 South just after 5 p.m., put a 56-year-old woman in a choke hold with his left arm and stab her multiple times with an object in his right hand, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report. A knife was later recovered by detectives at the scene, said Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Robin Heiden.
Bystanders grabbed the man and held him until officers arrived. He later told investigators he "planned on killing" the woman. The woman was in serious condition.
Police did not immediately know the relationship between the man and woman or a motive for the stabbing. Both were listed as being homeless in police databases.
Ronald Rivera, 63, was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of attempted murder. The woman was transported to the hospital.
Court records show Rivera has had several misdemeanor charges in recent years in Salt Lake City Justice Court, including drug- and alcohol-related offenses and assault.
