SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Highway Patrol was investigating a report of shots fired on the freeway Thursday.
About 8:30 a.m., a driver called UHP claiming a person in a green Yukon traveling in the lane next to him and behind him, stuck a gun out the window and fired several rounds, said UHP Lt. Jeff Nigbur. The driver wasn't sure if the gunman was firing directly at him or not.
"He didn't say it was necessarily pointing at him at any means," Nigbur said. "He looked back and saw that and heard several pops in succession from the firearm."
The incident reportedly happened on I-215 between 700 South and 1200 South. After the shooting, the suspect vehicle got off the freeway at 4700 South, the man told UHP troopers.
"(It's a) very dangerous situation for commuters on the freeway and obviously we want to stop that from happening again," Nigbur said.
Investigators were combing through the area Thursday, looking for possible shell casings. Depending on the type of gun, investigators said the bullets may have bounced and traveled a long way. A golf course was close to where the shots were fired, and there are also several homes nearby.
