HYRUM, Cache County — Crews had a fire in Blacksmith Fork Canyon under control Tuesday night after it burned 80 acres.
Firefighters gained control of the edges of the blaze before a storm chased them off the mountain about 7 p.m., said Jason Winn, deputy chief fire marshal for the Cache County Fire District.
"The fire isn't going anywhere tonight," Winn said Tuesday night, adding that Hotshot crews will be coming in to combat remaining hot spots Wednesday. "With this rain that's come through tonight, I'm pretty positive they'll be able to take care of it tomorrow."
The cause of the fire is still undetermined, and investigators will be on scene Wednesday. Witnesses reported a storm rolled through just before the fire began, so it could be lightning-caused, Winn said.
The fire damaged some power poles, but some seasonal trailers in the area were spared, Winn said.
More than 50 personnel, fire management officials, three engines and a helicopter were called in when the fire was reported. Winn said that made all the difference.
"That was absolutely a big help," he said. "We had a ton of resources come up from the different volunteer fire departments from the valley, as well as the Forest Service."
