FAIRVIEW, Sanpete County— A truck carrying two tankers full of emulsified asphalt toppled Monday evening, spilling almost 9000 gallons of the sticky, liquid substance down the side of Fairview Canyon.
At about 6:30 p.m., the truck was coming down the canyon at about mile post four, according to Utah Highway Patrol.
The driver told police that his brakes overheated, causing his speed to increase going into a sharp curve. According to UHP, The truck and both tankers toppled over, spilling most of the liquefied asphalt.
The driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment, though it was not immediately clear how serious those injuries were.
Sanpete County hazardous materials teams were called in to clean up the mess, and A+ Environmental Solutions was called in for the long-term cleanup efforts, according to UHP.
It was not known Tuesday how long the cleanup would take.
