WEST VALLEY CITY — A semitrailer pulled down multiple power poles Friday morning.
The driver of the semitrailer was coming out from the Driver License Division at 2780 W. 4700 South in West Valley City when the truck hit some power lines, pulling down several power poles. As a result, approximately 500 hundred homes and businesses were without power for most of the day.
Nearby residents said they heard what sounded like a crash before seeing the driver of the semitrailer dragging power lines. Police said the driver did not know he caught the lines above.
"(The driver) broke about seven to eight power lines, from the intersection of 2700 West down to about 3100 West," Lt. Rick Mclenon of the West Valley City police said.
Traffic was down to one lane in each direction as crews from Rocky Mountain Power were working to fix the power poles. Crews are expected to continue working until about 8 p.m. Friday.
With several poles down, residents are stuck in the nearby parking lots, waiting for the crews to sort out the mess.
"You're stuck here without being productive, and you really can't go anywhere," said Sergio Sotelo, who is patiently waiting for the power crews to make repairs.
Police said the driver had minor injuries. The driver was not cited, and police said there was a chance the driver did not do anything wrong. Investigators are working to see what height the power lines should have been and whether that was a factor in the accident.
