INDIANAPOLIS — Every two years, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square take their talents on the road for a tour. There are concerts and "Music and the Spoken Word" on the road. This summer, the choir is sweeping the Midwest with rave reviews.

From an interfaith meeting to the Indiana Pacers to the concert in Indianapolis, the singers are receiving standing ovations and making friends. The dynamic sound of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir filled Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Friday.

The choir has not visited this city since 1911.

"This is an iconic institution and to be able to hear these voices and to be able to give them a little bit of Hoosier hospitality is a real joy for me and my family," said Indiana Governor Mike Pence.

"I have been told that your last visit was 102 years ago. Welcome back."

Choir leaders participated in an interfaith meeting. People of many faiths heard from the choir's new president Ron Jarrett and music director Mack Wilberg.

"Having a production of music allows us to come together and really celebrate together the glory of what the Lord is doing in our community," said the Rev. Douglas Hairston of Mount Zion Baptist Church.

There is curiosity about the faith here because a temple is under construction and presently in the foundation stages. Church leaders are planning on dedicating the structure in 2015.

"Out of this has come here an understand and an appreciation of the Mormon faith," said Pamela Haase with St. Luke's Interfaith Group. "I had very little knowledge. I only know how big and how wonderful the families are."

Also before the concert, the Indiana Pacers presented the choir with a personalized jersey and asked the choir not to wait another hundred years to come back.
