NORTH SALT LAKE — Two people were injured after a runaway dump truck rolled and crashed into another vehicle Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred at 39 E. Eagle Ridge Drive about 8:15 a.m. The driver of a Spade Excavating dump truck hauling a load of dirt down steep Eagle Ridge Drive lost control of his vehicle, said North Salt Lake Police Lt. Troy Johnson. A preliminary investigation showed the brakes failed, he said.

The driver tried to slow the truck by down shifting, but it picked up speed near the bottom of the hill, Johnson said. The large vehicle went over the curb, took out some landscaping, and rolled onto a pickup truck in the parking lot.

"He was clearly in shock and was saying his brakes went out," said witness Dave Jenson. "He said he got around the corner, but that was as far as he got."

North Salt Lake Police and South Davis Metro Fire dispatched to the scene.

A man was sitting in the truck when he saw the larger construction vehicle headed his way, Johnson said.

The man got out and tried to run away but was struck while trying to escape, according to co-workers. He was being treated at a local hospital Wednesday for a broken pelvic bone, according to a co-worker.

The 45-year-old driver was pinned in the cab of the truck. Police had to extricate the man, which took about 30 minutes.

He was transported to a local hospital with back and upper body injuries, Johnson said.

According to tenants of a nearby office building, this is the third time a construction truck has had problems coming down the road and crashed.

Dirt and rocks spilled from the dump truck's bed onto the parking lot and several cars had minor damage.

The crash is the second in two days involving a dump truck. Tuesday's incident occurred in Provo on University Avenue. The truck veered off a bridge, falling 25 feet. iWitness photos showed the truck on its roof. The driver died shortly after.
