CORAL PINK SAND DUNES STATE PARK — Officials have identified a 13-year-boy who died in an ATV accident Thursday.

Colton R. Hansen, of Eagle Mountain, was riding a four-wheeler with friends and family at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park about 5 p.m. Thursday when he went over a dune, tumbled down the other side several times and sustained fatal injuries, according to Utah State Parks spokesman Devan Chavez.

Colton’s family members rushed him to the park’s visitor center where medical personnel performed CPR as they waited for a medical helicopter to arrive. Colton was pronounced dead, however, by the time the helicopter landed, Chavez said.

Colton was wearing a helmet during the accident and had the proper flag attached to his ATV. He had also completed the required OHV Youth Education course, Chavez said in a news release.

“Our thoughts are with the friends and family of those involved in this tragedy,” the news release read. “Colton Hansen was wearing the appropriate safety gear and had taken the appropriate training. We believe this to be a tragic accident.”

Utah State Parks officials urge the public to remember to take proper safety measures throughout this riding season.
