WEST VALLEY CITY — Police have released the name of a suspect in a hit-and-run crash that killed a grandfather on his bike Sunday.

Officers believe Dylon S. Cook, of Salt Lake City, was behind the wheel of a silver BMW with California plates that hit John Kinn, 65, shattering the car's windshield.

Investigators were unable to track down Cook on Monday and were seeking help from the public. West Valley police in a prepared statement identified him but provided no details on why he is a suspect.

Kinn was riding west on 3500 South at 5504 West about 4 p.m. Sunday when he was hit from behind, police said. Crews pronounced him dead on the scene.

Police barricaded 3500 South in both directions from 5600 West to 5200 West for several hours as they investigated.

Kinn's stepson, Jason Simpson, said he was calling Kinn to tell him about the Utah Jazz victory moments earlier when an officer answered and told him about the accident.

At the scene, Sam Torres, a driver who said he saw the accident, trailed the BMW to a Taco Bell parking lot, where the driver asked if he had hit a garbage can and Torres replied, "No, you hit a person."

Officers say the driver entered the fast-food restaurant and didn't return.

Police are asking anyone with information to call 801-840-4000.
